Do’s, Don’ts, and Tips for Storage Success
Do
- Put squares of carpet under wood legs of furniture
- Put carpet under box springs or mattresses
- Use plastic tubs with lids
- Keep an isle for easy access to back of unit
- If you are storing anything with an engine – keep gas low to empty, place mat or cardboard under oil pans
- Keep a tray of Decon or method of mouse deterrent fresh – we keep rodent repellent around buildings, but we strongly suggest additional protection inside your unit
- Be gentle with the doors – less force helps
- Secure renter’s insurance for your belongings, we do not cover your contents
Don’t
- Store gas, propane, or other flammable liquids
- Put a tarp or plastic down on floor – it will cause moisture in your unit and surrounding ones and will cause damage to your belongings
- Place cardboard boxes in direct contact with ground, set them on top of tubs
- Slam doors closed – it will break the springs
- Attach, screw, nail, or hang anything inside the units to the wall or ceiling
Tips
- If you are storing a dishwasher or washing machine – disconnect the water hose at the pump and drain. Freezing weather will crack and destroy your belongings if they are not properly drained
- Plan your storage – heavier items on bottom, stack tubs of same size together, maximize storage space with a plan of the space
- Start on back wall – store all the way across – good place for head boards or mattress (remember to put carpet under wood or mattress)
- Use side walls next, keep space up front open for odds/ends or items to lean against wall (back corners work good for this as well)
- Use a middle isle for those awkward or miss shaped items
